Police suicide Essay

In the recent past, there have been a number of cases involving police suicide. These have brought alarm to the nation as the same people delegated with the duty of safe guarding life are now turning against their own self. It’s believed that the number of officers who die from suicide in the   US surpass the number of those who die in the line of duty. In most of the cases, the cause of death is not revealed to the people to protect the victim’s family and friends. Abstract This research paper intends to seek the main causes of police officers suicide. It contains a sample of research questions it intends to answer plus their hypothetical responses. It also contains literature on previous findings. In addition it contains the methods used in data analyses as well as the possible out comes of the research. Statement of the problem Basing on the fact that, there figures from the police department showing that their colleagues do commit suicide, its evident that these is a problem that needs to be addressed before this situation runs out of proportion. It’s from this factor of admission that the research paper seeks to identify the possible causes of rise in the rate of police sources. Research question In order to get the relevant information to this research, several questions could be formulated which if answered correctly would provide answers and information to aid in writing this report. These include: †¢ Under what situations do police commit suicide often? †¢ What age group of the police is at a higher risk of committing suicide? †¢ Are there particular periods or events in the police calendar that are followed by high numbers of suicide? †¢ Do police who commit suicide have a mental disturbance history? †¢ Were they alcoholic? †¢ What is the perception of the suicide to the police officers? Hypothesis †¢ Police between the ages of 20 and 30 are at the higher risk of committing suicide. †¢ Both normal and police officers with mental disturbance histories do commit suicide. †¢ Police officers often perceive as the last resort to resolve or run away from challenges or situations they can’t bear. Literature review It has been confirmed that more than 110 police officers have committed suicide during the last year alone with more cases still under investigation, this was an all time high since the recording begun in the 1980s. However the rate of police suicide is still low when compared to people of the American society with similar back ground and educational levels. This can be attributed to the fact that the police have the capacity to provide mental health care to its officers counseling and other support services required. (Krueger,1998) Suicides can be attributed to relationship problems. This may include, pressure from their spouses, be it financial or general relationship problems. If an officer can’t stand this pressure and they obvious fact of the availability of the weapons, chances of committing suicide are high. Suicide can also be attributed to strain relationship between officers and their fellow officers or officers and their seniors. In addition, there are times when the officers get trouble at their places of work. For instance they may be accused of neglecting their duties or services or a performance that does not meet the set out rules and standards. This pressure leads to suicide rather than face the ensuing consequences or disciplinary measures which include termination of services or suspensions. (www.usarmy.gov/suicide, 2008) Police officers faced with regal procedures such as murder cases, corruption cases or negligence of duty cases do commit suicide in the event that they feel they may not win the cases or justice will either be delayed or denied. Moreover, there are financial difficulties that often lead to high rates of suicide among the police officers. Currently in the USA there are several financial obligations that pose a challenge to the police officers in their endeavor to meet them. This includes taxation fees, mortgages and family financial obligations. Officers who find it hard to meet these obligations do commit suicide rather than face the realities of their failures. Another factor that has lead to police suicide is stress and depression. Officers are often time tied in their work leaving no or little time for leisure or recreation. This unavailability of time to refresh leads to clogged minds and chances of suicide are increased. The horrifying and terrifying realities that the police are exposed to can lead to mental disturbances leading to suicide. This includes exposure to suicide scenes, gun murders and horrifying accidents. (www.National P.O.L.I.C.E..org, 2001) Methods of data collection (surveys, focus groups, observations) Surveys Several surveys have been conducted by the police force to ascertain the rate of police suicide. This information are often found at the police records and aided in getting the data required. Human rights groups have also conducted several surveys and have come up with figures showing the numbers, their age groups, marital status as well as the causes of the police officers suicide. Focus groups In addition focus groups can be used to gather relevant information concerning these suicides. They can focus on a particular police county for a period of time keeping records and happenings and durations of suicides. Observations Several eye witness observations can also be relied on to come up with relevant information and figures. The information can be got from immediate family members of the officers involved who are affected by his or her death or who witnessed them committing suicide. Another way of gathering information is by interviewing fellow police officers or their seniors. They may be holding vital information about the circumstances surrounding the officers death or possess information that had been on to the by the officer prior to suicide. Methods of Data analyses Analytical induction method This method will be used to analyze the collected data and come up with comments to be used in the findings. In this method, the event surrounding the officers suicide are studied after which a hypothetical reason on the cause of that is developed. Logical analysis In this process, the cause of an officer’s suicide is determined by an inductive way of reasoning. For example, the cause can be attributed to a factor leading to another. Example, an officer commits murder, legal proceedings are instituted against him, its delayed, he is frustrated and commits suicide. Possible outcomes/ findings There are several factors that can be associated with the increased number of police suicide. Some of them are purely personal while others are a multiplicity of various other factors. Mental problems can be associated to these suicides. Officers who have a mental problem are at high risk of taking their own lives especially so if they suffer from the condition in their line of duty and in the possession of a weapon. Through their unsound mind, they may make unsound decisions to kill themselves. Another factor that would cause an officer to commit suicide is alcoholism and drug use. If an officer is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, it reduces his or her cognitive abilities. With their reduced cognitive ability, they may turn against themselves as a way of actualizing their fantasies at the time which include the urge to kill or cause mayhem. Too much pressure at places of work may lead to suicide. Senior officers may pressure their junior to perform duties at specified period of time or which may pose danger to officers them selves. Such duties such as fighting armed drug cartels or tracking down terrorists and serial killers may lead to suicide among officers to avoid such works or as away of showing their displeasure to their seniors. The US justice system is also to blame for a number of police suicides. Rather than face the possibility of dismissal and the stigma associated with it from such legal proceeding such as murder, corruption or negligence of duty, officers results to taking their own life. In some other cases the regal proceedings may take longer period that expected leaving the officers frustrated and demoralized often leading to suicide.

Deborah tannens the argument culture Essay

In Deborah Tannen’s article â€Å"The Argument Culture,† she states that argument and debate â€Å"urge us to approach the world, and the people in it, in an adversarial frame of mine.† She calls this new norm of society â€Å"The argument culture†. The argument culture â€Å"rests on the assumption that opposition is the best way to get anything done†. Tannen uses the metaphor of an arguing spouse to convey the idea that society needs act more like a married couple to find a more constructive way to settle conflict rather than having a quarrel about every little disagreement it stumbles upon. Tannen believes that while sometimes it is necessary to defend yourself against offensive ideas, it is not morally correct to approach any issue or person in a hostile manner without reason. In the argument culture, society has only been taught to observe two sides of a story, which automatically sets up a debate where one side is pitted against the other. Tannen continues to declare how more and more communication is not face to face due to the Internet, which gives people a screen to protect their identity after saying whatever they please. She believes that the argument culture has a major impact on our lives and on our culture. Tannen states that the argument culture â€Å"makes us distort facts, waste valuable time, limits our thinking, and encourages us to lie.† Tannen asserts that â€Å"smashing heads does not open minds,† and that while conflict is not something we can avoid, it is something our culture needs to get under control. To avoid the automatic use of adversarial formats – the assumption that the best way to address a conflict is to fight about it – Tannen concludes that we as a culture should become more open to observing all sides of the argument (rather than just two), and to expand the world of debate in a more creative way rather than pervading it with negativity.

Bibliography * INTRODUCTION The Main Objective of this System is to design a system to accommodate the needs of customers. This application helps a customer to know about the flight’s information and can reserve seats throughout the globe irrespective of the location. This is a computerized system to make seats reservations, keep ticket bookings and availability details up-to-date. This web based system provides all flight’s information, availability of flights, availabili ty of seats. It contains information about pilots, air hostess and airport information. It also provides time schedules for different flights and source, destination details. It provides cost of tickets and enquiry details. Features of the project Reduces the complexity present in the manual system and saves time. 1. Users can access the required data easily. 2. It maintains accurate information. 3. Provides instantaneous updated information to all users. 4. Communication is fast and clear and avoids misunderstandings. It is a computerized system to make room reservations and keep room bookings and availability of details up-to-date System Analysis Purpose of the System This web based system provides all flight’s information, availability of flights, availability of seats. It contains information about pilots, air hostess and airport information. It also provides time schedules for different flights and source, destination details. It provides cost of tickets and enquiry details. Existing System * This system doesn’t provide register the multiple Flights * This system doesn’t provide online help to the public Proposed System The development of this new system contains the following activities, which try to develop on-line application by keeping the entire process in the view of database integration approach. * This system provide online help to the public * This system provide agents registration and book the bulk tickets * This system provide late running flights information before 3 hours * Online status of the tickets must be provided in real time Feasibility Study TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY Evaluating the technical feasibility is the trickiest part of a feasibility study. This is because, at this point in time, not too many detailed design of the system, making it difficult to access issues like performance, costs on (on account of the kind of technology to be deployed) etc. A number of issues have to be considered while doing a technical analysis. i) Understand the different technologies involved in the proposed system Before commencing the project, we have to be very clear about what are the technologies that are to be required for the development of the new system. i) Find out whether the organization currently possesses the required technologies * Is the required technology available with the organization? * If so is the capacity sufficient? For instance – â€Å"Will the current printer be able to handle the new reports and forms required for the new system? † OPERATIONAL FEASIBILITY Proposed projects are beneficial only if they can be turned into information systems that will meet the organizations operating requirements. Simply sta ted, this test of feasibility asks if the system will work when it is developed and installed. Are there major barriers to Implementation? Here are questions that will help test the operational feasibility of a project: * Is there sufficient support for the project from management from users? If the current system is well liked and used to the extent that persons will not be able to see reasons for change, there may be resistance. * Are the current business methods acceptable to the user? If they are not, Users may welcome a change that will bring about a more operational and useful systems. * Have the user been involved in the planning and development of the project? Early involvement reduces the chances of resistance to the system and in * General and increases the likelihood of successful project. Since the proposed system was to help reduce the hardships encountered. In the existing manual system, the new system was considered to be operational feasible. ECONOMICAL FEASIBILITY Economic feasibility attempts 2 weigh the costs of developing and implementing a new system, agai nst the benefits that would accrue from having the new system in place. This feasibility study gives the top management the economic justification for the new system. A simple economic analysis which gives the actual comparison of costs and benefits are much more meaningful in this case. In addition, this proves to be a useful point of reference to compare actual costs as the project progresses. There could be various types of intangible benefits on account of automation. These could include increased customer satisfaction, improvement in product quality better decision making timeliness of information, expediting activities, improved accuracy of operations, better documentation and record keeping, faster retrieval of information, better employee morale. System Requirement Specification Modules Description No of Modules The system after careful analysis has been identified to be presented with the following modules: The Modules involved are 1. Admin 2. Flight 3. Reservation SDLC METHDOLOGIES This document play a vital role in the development of life cycle (SDLC) as it describes the complete requirement of the system. It means for use by developers and will be the basic during testing phase. Any changes made to the requirements in the future will have to go through formal change approval process. SPIRAL MODEL was defined by Barry Boehm in his 1988 article, â€Å"A spiral Model of Software Development and Enhancement. This model was not the first model to discuss iterative development, but it was the first model to explain why the iteration models. As originally envisioned, the iterations were typically 6 months to 2 years long. Each phase starts with a design goal and ends with a client reviewing the progress thus far. Analysis and engineering efforts are applied at each phase of the project, with an eye toward the end goal of the project. The steps for Spiral Model can be generalized as follows: * The new system requirements are defined in as much details as possible. This usually involves interviewing a number of users representing all the external or internal users and other aspects of the existing system. * A preliminary design is created for the new system. * A first prototype of the new system is constructed from the preliminary design. This is usually a scaled-down system, and represents an approximation of the characteristics of the final product. A second prototype is evolved by a fourfold procedure: 1. Evaluating the first prototype in terms of its strengths, weakness, and risks. 2. Defining the requirements of the second prototype. 3. Planning an designing the second prototype. 4. Constructing and testing the second prototype. * At the customer option, the entire project can be aborted if the risk is deemed too great. Risk factors might involved development cost overruns, operating-cost miscalculation, or an y other factor that could, in the customer’s judgment, result in a less-than-satisfactory final product. * The existing prototype is evaluated in the same manner as was the previous prototype, and if necessary, another prototype is developed from it according to the fourfold procedure outlined above. * The preceding steps are iterated until the customer is satisfied that the refined prototype represents the final product desired. * The final system is constructed, based on the refined prototype. * The final system is thoroughly evaluated and tested. Routine maintenance is carried on a continuing basis to prevent large scale failures and to minimize down time. The following diagram shows how a spiral model acts like: Fig 1. 0-Spiral Model ADVANTAGES * Estimates(i. e. budget, schedule etc . ) become more relistic as work progresses, because important issues discoved earlier. * It is more able to cope with the changes that are software development generally entails. * Software engineers can get their hands in and start woring on the core of a project earlier. Globalization is simply defined as the process by which the different states, markets, technologies and firms become integrated and interconnected. Evidently, globalization has become an important facet of the twenty-first century. One of the more specific effects of globalization is the increased levels of trade and foreign direct investments worldwide. Furthermore, globalization has also facilitated the interdependence of the different economies throughout the entire world. In addition to what has been previously mentioned, globalization has also influenced the development of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) as a response to the recent increases in private investment. Non-Governmental Organizations consist of citizens’ groups that are organized on a local, national or international level. There are generally, three types of NGOs, these are: (1) advo cacy NGOs who are primarily tasked with the promotion of the governments or in international for the groups who do not have the capacity to do so; (2) operational NGOs, which primarily deals with the provision of goods and services to the clients who are in need; and lastly, (3) hybrid NGOs or those who perform both tasks previously mentioned. It is in this regard that NGOs are popularly known as those groups which are organized based on a certain issue. Most of the common objectives behind the establishment of the NGOs are the protection of human rights and that of the environment.

Cause and Effect of not Studying for an Exam Essay

Cause and Effect of not Studying for an Exam - Essay Example It is evidently clear from the discussion that some students cannot study for exams because they fall ill and find it hard to study for exams. They are generally good at studies but sometimes their physical health does not let them study properly. The effect of such approach towards exams is also fewer marks and low grades. However, their marks are not as bad as of those who take less interest in studies. Such students can hope to get average marks because they already have a good understanding of concepts because they study regularly. They have a good passion towards studies which does not let their marks go much down because of illness. The paper tells that some students do not study for exams because they do not have complete notes of their course material. The effect of such approach towards exams is also fewer marks. Such approach shows lack of interest in note-taking and more towards learning through hearing. Learning through hearing does not always work well for students becau se students need to have some note to revise before exams. They cannot remember everything that they hear in class. Therefore, lack of interest in note taking results in low grades in exams.

Managing for the Future - Essay Example It is also the co-owner of Sainsbury’s Bank along with Lloyd’s Banking Group (J Sainsbury Plc, 2012). Besides that, it has also owns property joint ventures with The British Land Company PLC and Land Securities Group PLC. What started off as a small retail store on London’s Drury Lane around the year 1969, Sainsbury’s has developed a huge history behind him over the years. Sainsbury holds more than 15% of the market share of the UK retail markets. Sainsbury hold the second position in the UK online retail market and is only behind Tesco. Sainsbury’s follows a simple passion of offering great food at fair prices to its consumers and this has been treated as one of the reasons for their success. By the year 2020, they have a target of sourcing all necessary raw materials and commodities in a sustainable manner (J Sainsbury Plc, 2010). Forecasts and Strategic Plan: Sainsbury is focused to provide healthy, safe, fresh and tasty food at fair prices. The chain continues to operate on five areas, which makes the chain differentiate itself from the retailers. The chain’s current focus plan is on: Growing space and creating property value Providing great food to the consumers Compelling general merchandising and clothing Developing new business channels Providing complimentary channels and services. Strengths Sainsbury’s has won numerous awards in the industry for its superior product quality over the past few years. Some of the awards comprises of fresh produce retailer of the year, honest food award and even wine retailer of the year. So it has clearly maintained industry standards and gained recognition in the industry The chain has made considerable amount of effort in order to modernize the brand by integrating technology at the point of sales (POS). Has tie ups with Nectar, a loyalty programme with an active user base of over 11 million. The chain has got high points on a regular basis in the industry’s most respected basket survey (J Sainsbury Plc, 2012). Weakness Their strategy is very puzzling at times. At times, they are targeting to appeal to mass markets which may result in tempting to go on an acquisition spree and then landing up with failed takeovers. Yet to recover the leading position of being the most preferred retailer in the UK region from the rival leading retailers. Opportunities Sainsbury’s ranking as an UK based online grocery provider is strengthened with higher sales on a year on year basis. With the increase in internet usage among the consumers, this segment can provide more sales to the retail chain. The addition of floor space in all new and existing stores for introducing the chain’s new health, beauty and household line of products will benefit the chain in the upcoming days and may provide greater share of revenue (J Sainsbury Plc, 2012). Threats Sainsbury’s is less committed to reinvest the capital generated in the business. This can spel l danger for the chain as Tesco who is a stronger competitor in this segment is more focused on committing a large amount of capital for maintaining their long term growth oriented strategy. Have high reservations in establishing the brand of Sainsbury’s overseas and in foreign locations, which provides them with a disadvantage of being

Flex Time Initiative Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Flex Time Initiative - Assignment Example Some professions like doctors and lawyers spend a lot of their time in their work and sometimes their social life or marriage life might be interfered. Looking from both angles, one is required to perform at both places, and failure to do so always leads to great repercussions. A person who concentrates more in his or her workplace than his or her home, sometimes have familial issue. A person who concentrates more on his family than on his or her job often have job problem. Hence finding a way to balance between the two components is vital in maintaining these two places in harmony (Ralston, 2006). In modern life, it is quite challenging to achieve a balanced professional and personal life. Times are really changing and people are trying to squeeze time to do other stuffs (Ralston, 2006). Some people do have passions they would like to achieve, studies they would like to pursue, secret affairs they would like to establish, management between personal life and work life can be essenti al. A person who draws a line between these two places and manages them well is a happy person since he or she is able to experience the thrill of all places at the right time and place. One way of one achieving such balance between work life and personal life is by achieving flexibility. This is a concept where one plans on how to be flexible between the two areas. One way one can accomplish this in busy situation is by job sharing. Flexibility is usually an added advantage to a person in terms of establishing a balance between job life and personal life. A person whose work is more involving till he does not get time to go home, can arrange with his or her co worker to carry some of his or her on agreed dates. One would also do the same for them in other times (Shallenbarger, 2010). Flex time, a concept that implies having flexible work arrangements can also be beneficial to some people in balancing between person al life and job work. Flex time could be represented by letting wor kers work where they would want to work. This practice is becoming more popular in many institutions like the legal departments and law firms (Ralston, 2006). This flex time initiative, also allows workers who work full-time to enjoy some time off at certain times of the year. The notion of flex time could include hours, workdays, weekends, holidays and other work arrangements. In this case, one is given some time outside the normal work place to straighten to establish a rapport with his or her personal life. In some jobs, people tend to work until they lose their head, but with flex times, at least one is relieved of his or her duties on some days. By so doing, flex time helps workers meet the demands of their personal lives (Ralston, 2006). As an initiative established in high risk or involving jobs, flex time is an initiative that relieves someone of work stress and increasing productivity by establishing a balance between personal life and work place. According to studies carri ed out on the relationship between working at work place and personal life, researchers found out that the two are related. When a person has work problems, he or she has a tendency of extending it into his or her personal life, the same when he or she has a problem in his or her personal life. Hence maintaining a balance between the two aspects is healthy in providing a good working environment (Lee, 2010). Another flex time initiat

Who is right, Globalization sceptics or Globalization radicals Essay

Who is right, Globalization sceptics or Globalization radicals - Essay Example Globalization is most commonly defined as the emergence of a country’s political and socioeconomic culture to the point of becoming significant for people in other parts of the world. In this analysis of the global media’s role in cultural globalization, focus will be on the role of the global media since the beginning of the wired electronic stage up until the present day. with the proliferation of digital technologies that allow for instantaneous two-communication on a global scale. Although it is argued that cultures have interacted and therefore cultural globalization has taken place since the beginning of human history, it is the technology of instant communication that truly forged a new frontier for cultural interaction and cultural globalization. The role the global media has had on cultural globalization has steadily increased and in recent years we have seen a paradigm shift in the way global media is managed. This new shift has changed the tradition top-down role of the media, dominated by governments and corporations and placed more power back into the hands of individual citizens allowing for a bottom-up approach to media. This ‘new media’ is given life by the easily-accessible, ubiquitous world of the Internet. As Andrew L. Shapiro (1999) argues that the "emergence of new, digital technologies signals a potentially radical shift of who is in control of information, experience and resources", the natural effect as Internet becomes more user-friendly and more available globally will be apparent in all factions of life. To fully understand the role that global media has had on culture we must first understand how media and communication has evolved. In her book The Media and Globalization, Tehri Rantanen explains the evolution media and communication through her identification of six stages of media and communication throughout human history. According to her, the stages of development are as follows: Oral Communication, Sc ript, Printed, Wired Electronic, Wireless Electronic, and Digital Communications. Globalization truly began with the use of newspapers and pamphlets. Beginning with newspapers and pamphlets drawn up by the printing press and typewriter innovations, the media sent word of new events, new ideas and calls for aid to constituents throughout their respective countries. The next technological innovation was the telegraph, which gave people across large stretches of land the ability to communicate instantly. This brought about a complete transformation in terms of global communication. For the first time communication across distances takes place at an immediate level. Next came the invention of the telephone, which broadened the range of media influence even further than the telegraph. Finally, in the twentieth century, the technology revolution that swept the nation brought phones, cell phones, and internet into the homes of average citizens. The ease of access to the latest means of com munication helped to bring more people into the know. With convenience as simple as the click of a button, millions of people had access to the information super-highway known as the Internet. This was the greatest shift of power to the common people and provided the greatest source of bottom-top influence in media coverage. It was Rantanen’s six stages of progress in the area of media and communications that resulted in expansion of ideas and Theories on cultural globalization can be divided into one of three ideologies on the subject. The first ideology subscribes to the view that the world has historically been dominated by many cultures and as history has progressed we have seen the world being dominated by fewer and fewer cultures. This view on cultural globa

Evaluation of Production Essay Example for Free

Evaluation of Production Essay In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? My five minute documentary preview, a view on the current influences Vivienne Westwood brings to Londons youth culture incorporates generic conventions, which are developed by comparing other real media products. To enable the use of codes and conventions, I watched different documentaries. It was difficult to conduct research that had a similar genre to my documentary however watching any documentary helped me gain some visual experience when it came to framing, layout and lighting etc. One documentary that I liked and paid particular focus on was the BBC documentary Michael Jacksons influence on Black Culture. In my opinion this documentary somehow related to mine as they both look at influences on a certain culture. I often paid attention to the framing of each shot to help me establish how a documentary should be filmed and then taking into account the conventions I learnt, and using them in my documentary to result in a professional look. One of the conventions I used was formal interviews. When filming the interviews i had to learn how to frame them accurately, and therefore i had take into account the position on the interviewee. In order to do this I used the rule of thirds. Rather than having the interviewee looking straight into the camera, the eye line is positioned slightly to the side looking opposite at the interviewer. While expressing their views it shows that the interviewee is having a direct conversation with the interviewer making it look as formal as possible. On the right side of the frame, i left room for any names that need to be added. In most real media documentaries the setting is quite apparent, there is not usually too much of a distraction behind the interviewee. Therefore whilst filming my documentary i tried to keep the background fairly ordinary in order to prevent the audience losing their concentration and instead to focus on the interviewee. During the plannnng of my documentary the idea i had in mind was very vague. However after having researched more and having got hold of some contacts that would be of use in the documentary, my ideas started to develop and change, resulting into a real plan that would have depth by including a beginning, middle and end. I had planned to go to different locations ie. Oxford street, Camden Town, Covent Garden etc where i would be able to find individuals that came from different sub cultures and interview them on the spot about their fashion sense and what it says about them. However when i captured it i noticed that the sound recording didnt come out clear enough and the wind came about as a problem because the equipment wasnt professional, therefore the microphone picked up every background sound. As a result, these different technical problems led to a lack of informal interviews. Furthermore, it was a trouble getting informal interviews as many people who I had approached refused to be in the interview. This issue was very frustrating as it was a hassle carrying the equipment around for nothing. I had also contacted Vivienne Westwood to see if she was willing to do an interview and other organisations such as the VA however they were not available to take part. On the other hand, I managed to get one informal interview that was successful, as well as getting hold of and contacting my own contacts who were reasonably effective to the documentary. The documentary starts off with the use of a presenter, who establishes and lets the audience know what they will explore throughout the documentary. As the documentary mainly consists of formal interviews there was no need for a presenter throughout the rest of the documentary. I wanted to use the convention of archive footage within the documentary. Using Clips of Vivienne Westwood that I would not have been able to obtain myself, i believe would have added more facts and information to the documentary, yet I wasnt sure if this would have got in the way of copyright so for this reason i decided not to include it. Moreover, the same issue came about when choosing which music to add to the documentary. It was hard to choose the right music that would fit with the context of the documentary as most of it was too clichi which was distracting from the interviews. However to overcome this problem i searched more around different genres and was able to find a suitable track that bonded well with the documentary. For my ancillary tasks I attempted to focus on ways that would be effective to the audience first and relate it to their needs. I was asked to make a poster that would advertise my documentary as well as a radio trailer for verbal advertisement. It is important to promote your product in order to tell the audience when it will be shown or a clue on what it will be based upon; similarly the radio trailer will give the audience an insight to the documentary and give them an idea on what will be said as well as an idea of its topic. I aimed to make both effective and accurate that relate to my documentary. In terms of my poster I would say it fits in with the content of the documentary as the documentary portrays how Vivienne Westwood started out, and explains the influences she has had on the current youth culture in London as well as how she has inspired many individuals. Therefore to demonstrate this through a poster I used a black white effect on Vivienne Westwood and in her body, placed colourful images of the different sub cultures that represent her influences. The contrast in colours makes the poster stand out and grab the audiences interest. The image of the different individuals representing a diversity of trends In the current culture of London fashion are the people that would have been interviewed if my documentary was longer, however it would be relatively insignificant to do this as it is only a 5 min clip. My other ancillary task, the radio trailer, was slightly harder in my opinion, as I had to not only inform the audience but also make it sound persuasive to raise awareness of the documentary. In order to make my trailer effective I looked back over my documentary and used sound clips from my interviews that would be useful in the trailer to give it a sense of reality and direction. For the script I wanted to make it sound catchy so the audience would not get bored and distracted. In order to do this I used short sentences that informed the listeners about the main details of the documentary. I had to make sure it was well written with the use of appropriate English so that it will appeal to the majority. I believe there is a strong link between the ancillary tasks and the main product as they all portray a similar style. By keeping a similar style, in my opinion I think this shows continuity throughout. In terms of audience feedback, I have learnt that the audience help me establish the positive and negative parts about my documentary. I believe that it is important to take the audience into consideration while making a documentary as they are the ones who are viewing it therefore it should be made to suit their needs. My aim was to complete the documentary to the best of my ability, in order to please the audience. When the documentary was complete I played it to the class where both students and teachers shared their opinions. The feedback that I received was mainly positive and detailed; though of course there were also criticisms. I believe it is essential to listen carefully and take in all criticisms as they will come in use for my future work and help me learn from my mistakes when making new media products. One of the many things the audience liked was the information and facts which the documentary showed and the fact that there were different sides to the story. I am pleased with this as it was my purpose to create not only a documentary that was informing but also showing different opinions and beliefs. I think this shows a sense of realism. Another point that the audience liked was the idea of one of the interviewees being filmed in front of a police station. This was interesting because the interviewee is seen to be a rebel; therefore juxtaposing the two was attractive. Overall I am pleased with my final product as the audience have shown interest in my documentary. To a certain extent, I believe there is a fair range of camera shots and techniques used throughout but there could always be room for improvement From start to finish, I used different types of new media technologies in order to help my research and planning stages through to the construction of my project. The main technology I used was the internet. This helped me when I was at the stage of researching and planning, as it was a quick and easy way to access all kinds of information that I needed. Firstly, the popular search engine Google, allowed me to carry out primary and secondary data. It helped me get information on the different locations and institutions that I found interesting such as The Fashion and Textiles museum, The London College of Fashion etc. It helped me gather information for my planning stage. Secondly, having access to email was very convenient. It was an easy way of allowing me to communicate with others by sending and receiving instant information where I could access it either my phone or computer. It helped me make sure everything was organised and arranged. Thirdly, before I started filming my documentary I had to know the specific conventions of documentaries therefore I wanted to watch a lot of different documentaries. I would usually watch BBC1 and channel 4 however instead of waiting for the documentary to come on Television; YouTube gave me instant access with a range of choices. During my project I had to present each stage of my planning and research. I used Microsoft PowerPoint to do this. PowerPoint, is easy to use and is a good way of presenting information in a clear and understandable way. I used Final Cut Express to create both my documentary and radio trailer. I enjoyed using this software as I was able to expand my skills and learn new ones by using different tools. One of the skills I learnt were putting footage over interviews and playing them simultaneously. I am now able to use voice over when recording sound and other tools when editing the sequence. I believe that from this it has given me more confidence to use the software because I now have the ability to structure a timeline and create a story giving it a narrative. Using Adobe Photoshop for my Poster was not so easy as it was my first time using the software, nevertheless with some practice and hard work I managed to complete my poster successfully. I not only completed it but used media technology to do so. I am satisfied that I have gained new skills. For the title of my poster I used a site called DAfont I found this site effective because it had a wider selection of fonts that I could choose from that suited with the overall image of my poster For my interviews it was important that I knew how to go out and actually use a camera. To make sure everything was perfect; I practiced with my partner before shooting. I can definitely say that my camera skills have broadened through learning how to properly take out a camera and attach it to a microphone, tripod and headphones while at the same time making sure the faming and sound is correct. All these new media technologies supported the research, planning and construction of my production project.

Discuss the theme of the Dream in the book "Of Mice and Men Essay Example for Free

Discuss the theme of the Dream in the book Of Mice and Men Essay None of the people on the ranch have freedom, and freedom was what George and Lennie wanted. Crooks, Candy and Lennie are victims, Crooks because of his back, where a horse had kicked him, Candy because of his hand, which he lost on the ranch, although he got two hundred and fifty bucks in compensation and Lennie is a victim because of his lack of knowledge. The main dream in the book Of Mice and Men is George and Lennies dream. Their dream is to have their own land where they will grow whatever they like, and to have a variety of animals, and Lennie will get to look after the rabbits, if he behaves well. The rabbits are all he talks and thinks about the perfect land and the rabbits that he will look after if he behaves himself. Dont you think of nothing but rabbits? The land will be ten acres, have a windmill, a little shack and chicken run. It will have a kitchen and plenty of food and water. They will build a smoke house where they will smoke the bacon, the ham, and the sausages. Theyll kill a pig or rabbit each Sunday. Theyll can fruits. Theyll also sell eggs and milk. They want to be answerable to nobody, to have freedom and be independent. Also, like Lennie says with a lot of enthusiasm, An` live off the fatta the lan` This is a dream that George believes will not come true, (but he continues as though the dream will come true to lure Lennie to behave himself.) because they dont have the money and Lennie is always getting in some sort of trouble and then, they have to run away. He doesnt mean to do any harm. All the time he done bad things but he never done one of em mean Soon Candy gets to know about their dream, and this is the only part of the book where it seems that the dream is only around the corner. With Candys three hundred and fifty bucks and Georges and Lennies fifty bucks each coming at the end of the month, which makes a total of four hundred and fifty bucks, George says he could swing the owners for that as the lady needs an operation. George has a dream of his own which is a life without Lennie. If he didnt have Lennie with him all the time, When I think of the swell time I could have without you, I go nuts. I never get no peace. If he also didnt have Lennie on his tail all the time, he could maybe even have a girl. This dream does come true at the end, but George had to kill Lennie or otherwise Curley would have come and killed Lennie himself. George learnt from Candys mistake of letting someone else kill his dog, so he killed Lennie himself making sure that the gunshot would not give Lennie any pain. Lennies life is ended, also with the dream as Lennie and George are talking about the dream until Lennie is killed like an animal. Candys dream was to be happy. The only time he was really happy was when he was a child. Candy has no other relatives, so he thought hed be happy living with George and Lennie. Candy is heartbroken when he finds out that Lennie has killed Curleys wife. Candy knows that their dream cannot come true now, because Lennie was part of the dream and now he is dead. Also, when Candys dog was shot, Candy covered his eyes with his arm. Old Candy lay down in the hay and covered his eyes with his arm. And this was what he did when his dream was shattered. We do not know what happened to Candy or George after Lennie was killed, as the story ended there, so the death of Curleys wife ended two dreams, but the death of Lennie made Georges second dream come true. Even though he didnt like killing Lennie, he didnt want to let someone else kill him. I suppose George thought it was the last straw if he is killing unknowingly, he could kill again. They could not keep running from everything he did wrong. He would get caught one day, and be killed. Curleys dream was to be big like Lennie and this is why Curley picked a fight with Lennie and he lost. He didnt give Lennie a chance to show him that he was not against him, but straight away headed for Lennie and started asking him questions. George had told him not to speak, so he didnt answer. Curley really got angry. George answered for him and he answered, An you wont let the big guy talk, is that it? He wants to be big and tall. He picks fights with anybody that is larger, in a way superior to him. He only has respect for Slim; we know this because he listened to Slim. I think you got your han caught in a machine. He knows what really happened. He didnt want to get laughed at either, so he listened and obeyed Slims instruction. But you jus tell an try to get this guy canned and well tell ever body, an then will you get the laugh. Curley agreed to this statement, otherwise he will be laughed at for starting the fight and then losing it. Even though Curleys hand was totally ruined, and Lennie got a couple of bruises and cuts nobody got in any more trouble. When his wife was killed he was really mad. Not mad for losing a loved one. He was mad at Lennie for killing her, and instead of staying with his wife, he hurried off to find Lennie and to kill him. We notice that although Curley was very protective over his wife, he didnt show any interest in her, and showed no signs of love. Nobody liked Curley, not even his wife. Curleys wife was an outcast, because she is the only female on the ranch and wore a lot of red. We can sense she is heading for trouble, because of the way she flirted with all the men on the ranch. Red lipstick and red finger nails shows a sign of danger. Curleys wifes dream was to become a movie star, and have nice clothes. This dream only came about because; some guy had said that she was a natural. this guy says I was a natural Her dream was shattered because she didnt receive a letter, this guy had promised to send to her. According to her, she thought her mother had thrown it away. We get the feeling that he didnt actually send the letter. She really thought that her mother had thrown it away and only for revenge, she got married to Curley. She didnt love Curley, nor even liked him. Shes not interested in Curley and Curley has no interest in her, but she is always looking for him, as an excuse, to talk to other guys. The other guys think shes a tart, and is jail bait. Crooks has a dream, which is when he was a little child he remembered he had two brothers and they used to do everything together. His dream is to be back with his family. I remember when I was a little kid on my old mans chicken ranch. He became negatively cynical. He doesnt believe life will get any better and he thinks that people always behave selfishly or dishonestly. Crooks is lonely and the only one who has respect for him is Slim. When he was small he used to play with people that werent black and this would upset his father. He didnt understand why until he was older. People called him a nigger and he is the only black person on the ranch. When he was a child, his family was the only black family for miles. Crooks had no other dreams; he just wanted friends that wont criticize him, because of his colour. None of the dreams came true, and are all crushed and shattered, because Georges dream didnt mean that he didnt want Lennie at all, he wanted him, but not all the time. Lennie had to be killed and that ends another two dreams. Candys dream was to be a part of George and Lennies dream, but as Lennie was killed, his dream also vanished. Curleys dream was to be big and as hes a grown man he wont grow any more. Crooks dream is to be back with his family, but it is impossible to go back in time. Curleys wife is dead which ends another dream. We see that John Steinbeck didnt make anybodys dream come true. Anjana Patel English coursework 2nd January 2001

TASK 2 PROJECT PLAN TASK 3 POWER POINT DOCUMENTATION Infrastructure limitations Despite infrastructure limitations in the Pacific, the target markets in developed countries are likely to be Internet users. Start small If unsure, start small. An existing website helps develop capacity to interact with customers and measure web potential. Lobby Government for effective IT Strategy. Lobby Government for effective IT Strategy that develops infrastructure and builds local capacity. Aware of channel conflict Channel conflict will not go away by itself, it needs active management. There are many positive examples today such as multià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Ëœchannel strategies. Thank You Thank you and I hope this presentation can lead the business to success. TASK 4- MARKETING PLAN In this task, I will prepare a brief marketing plan for special shoes with some sample activities that can be done to promote new e-commerce services. Marketing plan is to assist in the promotion of special shoes E-commerce Services and give them a brief idea on how to promote it to a wider market. There are many activities that can be done to promote the website. We can put a few advertisements in different media to promote the website, as an example, we can make advertisements through newspapers, television, radio, posters, banners, face book, twitter, e-mail, blogs and much more. Despite the many ways that can be used for advertising through the video, but I see the use Youtube.com as blatant advertising medium of the best video so far. This is because membership of the millions of YouTube highly beneficial to your video advertising. Implementation of the various ways to promote the website to reinforce the existing customers is to make a variety of activities in it. We can tell the latest news and activities via e-mail by sending a brochure, newsletter or through social networks like Face Book, Twitter, radio and TV advertisements. To attract new potential customers we have a range of activities and events of interest and gifts to be given to potential new customers solely to promote e-commerce services. We can publish advertisements in local newspapers to introduce the website address there. We can also issue a set of pamphlets on special shoe shop as enhance the website addresses to be distributed to the shops or to the public. We can also use banner advertisements on other websites, but we must get prior permission from the owner of the website. Similarly, the bulletin board signs therefore, we can place our banner advertisements on all those billboards. In addition, we can diversify the latest designs and images to be loaded into the website, Blog and the social networking site in this way we will be able to attract customers to our website. There we will show our company name and address to facilitate our customers to browse and visit our shoe shop. By participating in the social networks, it can increase the networks list so that we can intentionally promote new services in e-commerce. But do not forget to set the face book or Twitter as a business site, so people can add to or they can just simply click the button like and we can have lots of friends list. By doing this activity, we can promote new services. Perhaps what is called a search engine optimization is a way to get subscribers to your blog or website from search engines to identify some specific way. Many articles written about this and quite pleased to be applied into your web page. But in pursuit of the highest ranking position in search engines, sometimes we over-optimize your blog or website so we can show as overly optimized. Perhaps the following points will make your blog or website we are considered over Optimize Repeating several times the main keywords in the content of our web site to increase the key word density. Using keywords in bold or italic writing repeatedly in the articles are written. Placing the reference is not related to the other pages in our blog or website. Select a blog that has links do follow we put our comments, so we had the opportunity to enhance our position in the blog search engine. Besides, we have the opportunity to add subscribers at our website. This tactic may be effective in the short term to increase the highest ranking, but it will not last long. Sooner or later the search engine robot will be able to detect this and when this happens its likely to be significantly affected. Thus the best place to follow the basic meanssearch engine optimization without excess. Another type of promotional activities is offline activities. Such as publishing advertisements in certain newspapers, to display banner advertisements on billboards, and distribute brochures or flyers at the store or to the public, include the address of your store site would have many opportunities to get more potential customers. Follow the events gathering bloggers and make as many acquaintances. Merchandise Create and share your website, or to share things of interest-free. Write articles to the media and ask them to list your web address Include your web address on your business card, if you are the seminar speaker, say the name and address of your web site. If you have a chance to speak in more general says the name and address of your web site! Another no less effectiveness way is to introduce addresses into the yellow pages directory, draw a map that shows where the location of your store. In this way, subscribers would flock rushed to your store. Special shoes may use information collected from visitors to the website for further marketing activities. With this information collected, companies can use the information to create new value for subscribers. The new value for subscribers is as offering superior subscribers history online reservations, reserve under the previous purchase and display the latest information on products in which subscribers may be interested. In addition, if the shoe stores to a special e-commerce service provider succeed, they must involve all approaches as enabling potential customers to find information easily and adjust the depth and nature of the information. With this approach may encourage subscribers to buy. Special Shoe Stores must detect and check the behavior of subscribers or visitors that they can use the information to provide customized, value-added digital products and services in their websites. Special Shoe Stores need to use technology-enabled relationship management tools so they can increase their contact with subscribers to succeed. Online chiropody services to assist in promoting the new site. This is due to online services can help subscriber on how they can select the right shoe for them to buy. Especially when the shoe stores are advertised, either through online or offline promotional activities, subscriber may be interested in by the advertising that display on foot care services. It can make subscriber want to know about the shoes they should wear. This service may attract potential new subscriber, it can promote the services of Special Shoe Store e-commerce. Conclusion Based on a strategic marketing plan to promote new e-commerce is not so difficult. As long as we understand the business consequences of this in detail, at least we should know our finances. Although there are so many types of advertisement, if we do not have enough knowledge about the right marketing plan and finance is limited, so we cannot do any advertisement. With extensive knowledge of planning and marketing plan and financial strength, I believe, with the ingenuity of this plan it may help us to promote our website. So we can easily select specific advertisement with creativity and advertising information. Therefore, a brilliant plan really gives satisfaction to customers and shop owners themselves. (1,173 words)Listen Read phonetically TASK 5 LOCATING E-COMMERCE SITE Introduction As we have discussed in the previous task, one way to ensure that the new e-commerce site can be quickly and easily found by prospective customers is by making sure the search engine will be able to find it and place it as the top of the search result. In this task, I am going to explain more on this topic. Basically, a search engine is a software program that searches for sites based on the words that you designate as search terms. Search engines look through their own databases of information in order to find what it is that you are looking for. [Wendy Boswell, (2011) http://websearch.about.com/od/enginesanddirectories/a/searchengine.htm] The search engine positioning concept Before we take a look at the importance of the search engine positioning, let me discuss about the meaning of the search engine positioning first. The first step is done by an internet browser to find any information on the internet is to type keyword or keyword into the Google search bar. If they press enter, all the articles in the web of the index in search engines, which contain the keyword in the type of internet browsers today, will appear in the result. Keyword articles and is an important partner in the internet marketing. The importance of search engine positioning The search engine positioning for your website in the search engine result is very important because internet browsers are really hungry for information, or information contained in the various fields. Therefore, to provide information or information in the article is one of the most effective ways to attract visitors to our business web. Among the reasons why the article became a key marketing methods used by experts and specialists is the first internet marketer. Native American Ritual Dancing Essay -- Native Americans Rituals Tradi

Native American Ritual Dancing â€Å"It has often been said that the North American Indians ‘dance out’ their religions† (Vecsey 51). There were two very important dances for the Sioux tribe, the Sun Dance and the Ghost Dance. Both dances show the nature of Native American spirituality. The Ghost Dance and the Sun Dance were two very different dances, however both promote a sense of community. â€Å"The Sun Dance was the most spectacular and important religious ceremony of the Plains Indians of 19th-century North America† (Lawrence 1). The Sun Dance became a time of renewal and thanksgiving for Native Americans. Everyone had a role to play either in the preparation leading up to the dance, or within the dance itself. The entire tribe was expected to attend the ceremony. There were also some social aspects to the dance, such as powwow dancing in the afternoon and evening. The Sun Dance was an important ceremony, which was held once a year. Turner states that ritual stresses unity of (the) group, and that is exactly what was done in the Sun Dance. Different tribes held the ceremony at different times of the year. Generally, â€Å"The Sun Dance was performed in either the late spring or the early summer, when all the bands of the tribe were reunited after the winter† (â€Å"Dance†). The Sioux tribes celebrated the Sun Dance ceremony for four days. Other tribes are reported to extend the ceremony over eight days. This dance, like other Indian rituals and ceremonies is not rehearsed. There are many provisions that need to take place in order to prepare for the ceremony. In the week prior to the dance, the Sun Dance chief arrives early to set up his campsite and oversee the raising of the ceremonial tipi that the dancers dress and prepare in (McGaa 85). The Sun Dance chief is said to be the most respected holy man with in the tribe. The men of the tribe then join in the preparations for the dance by construct sweat lodges, which are used in the ceremony. They also collect other necessities, which are needed for the dance. The first day before the Sun Dance is a very significant day. In the early morning hours a group of men â€Å"known for their eminence in their tribe were chosen to look for a (cottonwood) tree with a fork in the top† (â€Å"Dance†). Along with this select group went a chosen woman. She took the first chop at the tree. She then held a con... ...ight%20News/Native_American_Beliefs.htm> Hultkrantz, Ake. Italian Immigrants Essay -- Legal Issues, US Government

Immigration began late for the Italian population. With the main period of immigration coming in the late 19th century, Italians were already several steps behind the Irish, German, and French immigrants (Nelli 38). This proved to be detrimental to the Italians as the previous immigrants had already stitched themselves to the flag producing a resolute hatred for incoming immigrants, one of which was Salvatore Rossi. Having fled Italy in 1897 due to economic hardship, he pursued the â€Å"American Dream† in New York, by obtaining an education and landing an uncommon job within the U.S. Government. Italian immigrants in this period of time suffered extreme racial prejudice and experienced numerous obstacles in their process of immigration and assimilating themselves into society. In the end, Salvatore Rossi, unlike many Italian immigrants, stitched himself to the flag. Notable Italian immigration began in the 1900s. Missionaries were sent by the Catholic Church to console and convert the native population of America. The early immigrants were dispersed across the nation with large concentrations in the northeast (â€Å"America Put Under Microscopes† 2). Within these regions began the largest influx of Italian culture. Italian inspiration began the first Columbus Day celebration as well as the construction of the first Opera house in America. Italians in the early 19th century had a limited role in American culture however with the economic disparity of Italy in the mid-19th century, it swayed many to immigrate to the United States bringing along their way of life (â€Å"America Put Under Microscopes† 1). Born to a family of subsistence farmers, Salvatore Rossi fits the mold of the atypical southern Italian laborer. Heavy taxes had be... ... son of a subsistent Italian farmer, prejudiced by many, Salvatore cut himself free of the thresholds and chains of the typical Italian-American. Through determination, he came to America and educated himself bringing him into the modern world, thus assimilating himself into the American way of life. Salvatore had overcome the difficulties of the entire immigration process, beginning with leaving his family behind, trekking across the Atlantic, and starting a new life in America. Racial prejudice had also not overwhelmed Salvatore’s willpower as he continued to fight again the stereotypical mold of the free-riding Italian-American who offers nothing to American society. Although he paid the ultimate price of leaving behind his extended family and Italian way of life, Salvatore by becoming a U.S. Immigration Official, had stitched himself to the American flag.

The Other Ending To Huckleberry Finn :: essays research papers

Howling Adventures Amongst Royal Frauds After all the confusion was settled at Aunt Sally and Uncle Silas’ farm, Tom, and Jim and I decided to go down the river to the Indian Territory and go for howling adventures amongst the Injuns. So we fixed up a raft and said good-bye. A week later Tom and I ran out of money so we couldn’t buy matches or cornmeal or any of that kinder stuff. So the next town we stopped at (by the name of Hicksville), the rain was pouring down so hard and the wind was a’ howling and whooping and the thunder made you jump right out of yur’ pants, we tied up the raft and found a good dry place to put Jim and keep ‘m hid (right under the dock where the platform reaches the land). Tom and I started to walk up towards the town and he told me about this book he read. It was about two boys who ran out of money whilst traveling down a river so they decide to sell rocks to people telling them that they’re magic. I got the feeling that Tom was trying to come up with ideas to make some money. So I says â€Å"Why don’t we jest steal some money?† And for the first time Tom agreed with me. So we stole some money from a blind man and ran as fast as we possibly could to the dock. Then we almost forgot Jim so Tom ran up to the end of the dock; went under it and told Jim it was all right to come out; we headed down the river, again. As we got further and further down the river, we realized we were in the Indian Territory. We tied up the raft on a tree that had falled down across the river. We set up a lean-to and cut some firewood, and put it in a dry place to keep it from the rain. After we set up camp, Tom and I took our rifles and decided to go hunting. We caught ourselves a rabbit and figer’d we best get back to camp before it got too late. When we got back to camp the lean-to was destroyed and Jim was gone. Well, it started to rain again and it was getting darker by the second. Tom looked over at me and said, â€Å"Injuns!† â€Å"I don’t know.† says I. â€Å"Do you have a plan, Tom?† â€Å"A plan for what?

M believes that true change lies in the hands of the children, for they are the ones that have a future possibility of sparking change in society. Also, Scout does not like her cousin, Francis, because they dont fetch similar interests and she is calling manoeuvre a Niger lover, which is seen as a gravid thing. He is taunting Scout about her father. 3. When Uncle twat tells Scout she is developing out of her pants, he mover she is acting too originate for her age and is not old large to date he difficult concepts of life, thusly should not act like she does, peculiarly the ones simulateing Attics life. He is telling Scout that she is getting more aware of manhood concepts that she may be too young for. Also, she is too young for s draining and the like. 4. She has in like manner been saying some unpleasant things about tactical manoeuvre in regards to the judicature case. auntie Alexandra seems to be a very critical and Judgmental person. . From overhearing Uncle Jack and Attics conversation, Scout heard Uncle Jack telling play he doesnt want to grant kids of some hard times coming her way for the next year because of the abbreviates involving the tribunal. The town is prejudice and therefore Scout may deport to hear some un pleasant things going around about her father fetching upon the case. This also implies that simulated military operation knows that people are condemning him for taking the case. 6. The final fourth dimension of this chapter is important because it tells us that simulated military operation valued the kids to hear what he was saying (ask him what happened quite a than believing moors). Chapter 10 1 . When Scout says that Tactics was feeble, I believe this is her opinion as the events are hap in her childhood, but by the end of the chapter she doesnt believe this anymore because she learns about her fathers amazing aim and that he has a inscrutable past. . Tactics says its a sin to eat a mockingbird but Miss Maude is the one who explains why it is a sin because the birds do not cause any harm to anyone and Just make music. 3. Heck Tate didnt want to be the one to shoot the dog (Tim Johnson) because he doesnt hand a dear(p) aim and he knows he would have robbery hit the R addled house instead, which could cause a big problem. 4. Tactics cuts morose Tate as he is oral presentation to Gem because he was about to light upon something about Attics past that he does not want his kids to know. 5.Gem believes they shouldnt tell anyone at school about Attics shooting abilities but Scout thinks they should (she wants to brag about her father to everyone at school). I oppose with Gem because there was credibly a reason Tactics didnt tell them about how well he place shoot and did not want it to be something public. Gem seems to respect and understand his dads point of view. Chapter 11 . Tactics tells Gem to hold your head high and be a gentleman when Mrs Dubos is taunting him about his father. He tells Gem to let anything she says or does to make him mad because shes old and sick.He says to Just be respectful towards her. 2. Mrs Dubos tells Gem and Scout that their mother was a lovely woman and there was no woman lovelier than her. She wished their father had remarried though when she give tongue to this, Gem was baseless and it make him mad. 3. Mrs Dubos asked Gem to read to her every afternoon after school and on Saturdays, for two hours, for a month as a punishment for his crime. It was a fair punishment but it wasnt fair that he had to do it for so long. 4. Tactics thinks insults like Niger lover dont mean anything to him.He Just thinks people happen to say them in their everyday language when the want to evaluate someone. I do not coincide with him because that are saying it on calculate and it is disrespectful and rude. 5. Tactics though Mrs Dubos was a great wench because she was full of fearlessness and bravery. She was a morphine addict but decided to become clean to begin with she died and she fulfilled this promise to herself. He say she died free. 6. When Tactics says Mrs Dubos is a model of real courage rather than a man with a gun in his hand, I think he is right. He means that it takes real courage to die sob er.He explains to Gem and Scout that a man with a gun isnt real courage, its Just material bravery. Real courage is doing whats right, no social function the points, which is what Mrs Dubos did. 7. I think Harper lee side chooses to end the first come apart of the admit after chapter eleven because it is a twist point in Scouts childhood. Scout has unexpended Boo Raddled butt end, which was a major(ip) theme in part 1. dissipate 2 seems like it will induce a refreshful theme, or a new part in Scouts Essen, so it seems like he perfect way to end the first part. Chapter 12 1 . Scout and Gems visit to the First barter for Church (Scaloppinis church) went well. They were welcomed by everybody move out Lull, who is explained as a trouble maker. They both dont understand some of the things that this church does like not having a book of hymns to sing from, but all this later get explained to them from California. 2. Scout learns many new things about foul people that she w as unaware of and these were quite surprise to her. She learned that moroses are as educate as they are. She learns this when she asks California why they dont have hymn books and California explains that it is because most of the nasty people dont know how to read. 3.Gazebo is Scaloppinis eldest son and Scout learns that when Gazebo was younger, there wasnt a school for him to attend since he was swart. Since there was no school for him, California taught him by making him read a varlet of the Bible everyday as well as reading the Blackstone Commentaries (a book happy to her by Gem and Scouts grandfather). 4. California speaks otherwise at the Finch house compared to her friends at church because she says it is not right for a black woman o talk like a white person. She wants to be lady like and not show off to people because it aggravates them.Chapter 13 1 . aunt Alexandra moves in with the Finch family for a slice because she thinks it is well for Scout to have a maidenl ike influence and thinks she should be there for her as she will be interested in boys and clothes soon. 2. The first couple things aunt Alexandra says when she comes to the Finch household are typical of her instal my wallet in the room California. denim Louise, stop scratching your head. She is racist, bossy and exacting about acting proper. It is evident she is racist because she remarks bout Tactics defending a black man, saying it will get out the familys temperament. Moreover, Francis learned taunts like Niger lover from aunt Alexandra. She is also bossy because she is constantly reprimand Scout and telling her she must act more lady- like and demands that Tactics unavoidably to stop letting the kids get about. 3. aunt Alexandra thinks Scout is dull because she does not per centum much with Aunt Alexandra as she does not feel they are close teeming and they do not cover the equal ideas. 4. The people on Gem and Scouts passage gave Aunt Alexandra a very impregn able welcome. She got along well with the neighbors. Miss Maude sunbaked a Lane cake, Miss Stephanie came over, Miss Rachel invited her for coffee and even MrNathan Raddled came to court her Aunt Alexandra became secretary of the Macomb Amanuensis Club. She also had the Macomb ladies over for tea. 5. Aunt Alexandra thinks the Finches are made of many generations of gentle breeding (said by Tactics) they are an old family of originals of Macomb. Aunt Alexandra thinks the kids deprivation to act more like ladies and gentlemen to show how worthy one of Macombs oldest families are and to conceptualise the honor of being a Finch. This shows that Aunt Alexandra thinks of the Finches are better than most families in Macomb.Tactics however told the kids not to worry about this and he does not want them to think about how they are supposed to act (they are Just children). I agree with Tactics because it should not be required to act or live a certain way Just ground on which family you come from. Chapter 14 1 . Attics explanation of rape was very undesirable for Scout because it was beyond her understanding. He said the rape was carnal knowledge of a female by force and up when I asked her what it was? This shows that Scout does not understand what her father is saying. 2.Aunt Alexandra wants to dismiss California because she thinks that she can replace California now that she has go in with them. She thinks California hasnt make Scout into a lady and that now she can take upon the motherly role in the house as well as take upon the Job of cooking for the family. Tactics does not agree with anything she says. He says l dont think the children have suffered one bit from her having brought them up. He says that without California, they wouldnt be able to get through many situations, as she is part of the family. Moreover, he does not wasnt Alexandra working hard (cooking). Scout doesnt like that Gem has been acting more mature lately and involving himself in ad ult situations. Him fighting her back showed that he is still childish, which cheers Scout up a bit. When he tells Tactics about Dill however, she is very disappointed. She feels as if he had humiliated their childhood code. Also, she thinks that Tactics may get mad at Dill and make him go back home. 4. From Dills flier of his running past, we learn that he prefers to run off to Macomb where he doesnt have anyone except Gem and Scout, rather than being with parents that dont birth attention to him.We also learn that he lies about most of the things that he says. This may be because it makes him feel special to get that attention. Chapter 15 1 . The nightmare that descends upon the children is the main(prenominal) racism that threatens to harm not only their father, but even them the reality of what their fathers confused in is now apparent. 2. The UK Klux Klan was an organization of men developed on promoting and enforcing racist and intolerant ideals. Although the group has evolved over time, they are most notably identified by the wearing of sheets and robes to hide their identities (gangsters).I feel Attics description of the take away in reality downplays the dangerous nature of the ASK, which he probably deliberately does so as not to alarm Gem. 3. Gem refuses to go home when Tactics tells him to because he realizes that his father is outnumbered and facing physical harm. This reinforces the courage of Gem. 4. Scouts bare attempt at striking up polite conversation with Walter Cunningham father seems to move the men of who they are individually, and not as a mob and perhaps makes them mortified of what theyre doing to Tactics and his children. This persuades the lynching party to give up their attempt on turkey cocks life. . This chapter really highlights how the innocence of youth is able to affect this corrupt gang it reminds us that this is a story about a claw whose innocence will be challenged with growing up. Scout is learning what we all learn people arent always as they seem, unstable things can happen in good little towns and people dont always share the same beliefs, nor are they tolerant of others beliefs. Chapter 16 1 . Scout notices that Tactics is get-go to become annoyed and impatient with Aunt Alexandra. L was beginning to notice a subtle alternate in my father these days, which came out when he talked with Aunt Alexandra. It was a quiet digging in, never directly irritation. 2. Mr Dollops Raymond is a wealthy white man who lives with his black wife and they have mulatto kids. He also sits with and enjoys being around blacks instead of whites. He isnt racist and doesnt think of the blacks as lower class people. He is also a inebriatedard. 3. Reverend Sykes takes the children to the balcony a kind gesture of the reverend because he doesnt know the kids were instructed not to come.If he knew they shouldnt have been there, hence he should not have helped them to get in the courthouse and watch the campaign. 4. Judge Taylor is and liberal edge and often puts his feet up and naps during footraces. He likes to clean his fingernails with a pocketknife. He is smart and knows a lot about the law even though it seems like he takes his Job casually. He delivers a firm grasp that comes before him. He also has an interesting habit of permitting smoking in his courtroom. The trial hasnt officially started but I think he will take this trial seriously. Chapter 17 1 .Heck Tastes curtilage Heck informs everyone that no one had called for a restitute, bob Lowell was the one who called him and he say Amylases wounds (around her neck, on her arms and her right eye is black). With Hacks statements, Tactics shows that there was no physical license of a rape since a doctor was not called. 2. In this chapter, we learn a lot about the Lowell family and their home life. They are on welfare, there are a lot of kids but no lifelong have a mother and they live in extreme poverty behind the dump and close to the blacks. Also there is someone planting flowers there (we can popularize it is anthropoid). . From curtsy Elses secernate, we learn that he heard his daughter screaming and adage turkey cock inside the house from the window. wharf said Tom was gone by the time he got on and wherefore he hurried to go get Heck Tate. 4. Tactics wants tail to write out his name to see if he is leave handed or not. Since manlike has a black eye on the right eye, it is most likely the person who equipment casualty her was left handed and the board aphorism that wharf was left handed. This portrays Bob as the villain and we can infer that it might have been Bob that hurt staminate. Chapter 18 1 . Male is different from her father. She cares more about her appearance as she tries to stay clean, as opposed to her father who looked like he bathed yearly. Also, she is more sensitive (she cries in the courtroom), whereas Bob Lowell seems to take everything as a Joke. . Male may have been repetitive in the courtroom to make people feel sorry for her when she was reminiscing about what happened to her. It added a dramatic effect to her story and made the Jury feel sorry for her. She played the role of poor little white girl. 3. Male does not respond well to Attics attempts at being polite. She thinks that Tactics is mocking her when he calls her Maam and Miss Male. This shows that she is not used to people treating her amicable or being polite towards her as she thinks it is a Joke when someone does. This could show that her home life isnt that great. 4. Mr Gilder does not prove Toms guilt that well. He Just asks Male her side of the story and thats it. In the eyes of the Jury however, he may be more convincing. This is because the whole town is racist and prejudice against Tom al lay out. Therefore they would be more likely to support Male (innocent little white girl) opposed to a black man.Chapter 19 1 . Tom visited the Lowell house because Male wante d Tom to bust up a throne for her. 2. Scout thinks that Male is the loneliest person in the world because in the trial it is revealed to us that Male does not have any friends. 3. Male does not have a very good relationship with her father. At the trial we find out that he is a drunkard and we can infer he may even be abusive. 4. Dill started crying during this part of the trial because he knew that Tom wasnt being set somewhat and that Mr Not mature enough to understand the meaning of things such as racism.Chapter 20 1. Mr Dollops Raymond is not an evil man. He acts like he is always drunk to protect himself from people knowing that he likes black people. He understands how they feel when being discriminated and believes that they are the exact same as everyone else. . Mr Raymond hides Coca-Cola in a paper bag so people think that it is alcohol. He wants an excuse for acting the way he does and for liking black people. Mr Raymond wants people to Judge his actions (which he believ es are right) not by his personality, but to blame it on his alcoholism problem. . Tactics thinks Male is in the wrong because she tried to cheat a black man and make up a story to get him punish (even though this is common). Tactics says that Male knew she lied and put evidence of her offense away from her. She knew full well the enormity of her offense. (pig. 272) 4. Tactics feels that all people should be do by evenly, no matter their age, race or gender. In the trial, he is arduous to express this by telling the Jury that what Male did was wrong because she was trying to get a black man in trouble. He says fluff should have never come to the trial. This case is as simple as black and white. Mr Raymond also talks about Tactics as being a good person and sharing the same views as him. Chapter 21 1 . Gem expects the verdict to be Tom Robinson declared innocent. Tactics does not share Gems confidence because he realizes how difficult it can be to change mesons mind when they have their mind set on something and unwilling to change their view, peculiarly when a black man is involved. 2. one would expect the jury to be middling quick to reach a verdict about this case. Most would believe any trial involving a black man would be over quickly, since they believe that the black person will always be guilty. The item that it took the Jury so long to make a decision indicated that at to the lowest degree a few of them believed that Tom Robinson was innocent. I believe the verdict wasnt predictable. Although history indicates that Tom Robinson will be found guilty, you still want to believe otherwise. . While waiting to hear the verdict, Scout think back to the incident regarding the mad dog, which reminds us of one of the novels central themes, which is courage. She remembers this event because in both that incident, as well as the trial, she witnessed accredited acts of courage, both performed by her father. Tactics had the courage to do what was right an d put down Tim Johnson for the best of the people of Macomb. Then, during the trial, Tactics did everything inside his power to defend a black person, even though it put almost every person in Macomb against him, it was the right thing to do. Chapter 22 1 Aunt Alexandra thinks the children shouldnt have been allowed to go to the trial, but Tactics Justifies them by saying, This is their home, sister Hey might as well learn to cope with it. (pig. 285) Although Tactics did not want the kids in court, he believes that the children must be exposed to the acidulated realities of Macomb and they have to learn to cope with this. 2 Miss Maude tells Gem that things are never as bad as they seem because it is important to look beyond all of the bad results and see the good side of people and situations. She tells him that good people helped in his trial Tactics, Judge Taylor and Macombs black union all stood behind Tom, supporting him through everything.See the glass half full. 3 Dill say s that he wants to be a bozo when he grows up because he wants to laugh at people all the them. However, Dill replies saying, Well Im goanna be a new kind of clown. Im goanna stand in the centerfield of the ring and laugh at the phratry. (pig. 290) I dont think Dill will keep this ambition for long because he seems to change his mind a lot and tell stories all the time. 4 Attitudes towards racism have changed for the better since the asss and asss. Although, racism is still an issue in some modern societies, the acrimony is much less. Bob Lowell is angry with Tactics because he made him look bad in front of the entire town, ruin his reputation. I think this threat might be a real one but I dont think he will kill Tactics, instead get him back in another way. Chapter 23 1 . When Tactics paid no heed to Bob Elses threat, it was the right reaction. Bob was just trying to aggravate Tactics and get under his skin but instead Tactics reacted the opposite of what Bob wanted, staying calm. 2. Circumstantial evidence is evidence hat is base only if another circumstance is correct. This usually isnt enough or binding proof. This has to do with Toms bunkoion because it was ground on Heck Tastes circumstantial proof (which was only base on Male and Bobs word). 3. Tactics tells Scout it took the Jury so long to convict Tom because not everyone in the Jury was against Tom and people were really offset to think for themselves, looking at the facts, rather than Just the color of his skin. 4. Social classes are not good for society as they create discrimination. Everyone should be handle equally and it is not air to say one family is better than another. You should not Just aggregate with the people in the same class as you, but instead treat everyone equally. . Gem thinks the reason Boo Raddled hasnt left his house in so long is because he does not want to. He does not want to be a part of a society that is prejudice and Judgmental. I agree with Gem because Boo comes out when he wants to (ex. pose the blanket on Scout during the fire) however, he Just wants to do nice things for people, no matter who they are and that is why he expects others to be the same and treat everyone fairly and equally. Chapter 24 1 . I dont think that the missionary ladies were sincere when talking about the Mourns because they Just strikeed something to talk about that was related to religion. . When Scout said that her britches were under her dress, the other ladies all laughed at Scout but Miss Muddies reaction was very serious and she did not laugh. Scout said it was because Miss Maude never laughed at her unless she meant to be funny. 3. The Macomb ladies as depicted in this chapter are very devoted to God, however the majority of them are very prejudice and discriminatory. They have tropically female roles (wearing dresses and gossiping) and are Just like most of the other people in Macomb (hating blacks and going to church. 4. Tom was killed while he w as trying to escape from the prison. He charged at the fence and tried to boost it during their exercise period. He was shot 17 times Attics explanation is that Tom was probably tired of white men taking chances for him, so he decided to take one of his own. I agree with Tactics because during this whole trial, Toms life was in the custody of white men and he saw an opportunity to finally take it into his own hands and so he took the chance. . In this chapter, we see Aunt Alexandra in a new light because we see her more sensitive side by cover that she only wants brother, and I Just want to know when this will ever end. (pig. 236).Miss Maude supports Alexandra when the missionary circle is insulting Tactics and she sticks up for him by reminding the women that they are in Attics house eating his food so they consider to be respectful. Chapter 25 1 . When Macomb hears about toms death, Macomb gossips for about two days and they act as if Justice has been served. This shows how w illing Macomb is to simply excuse the death of a black man. 2. Toms death was considered typical because he ran away and was shot. The death of black people in that time period happened regularly. race responded with Niger always comes out in me. 3. Scout sees that the court Our) in Macomb was giving in Just because of the fact that Tom was black. They said he we guilty despite all the evidence that proved otherwise. The town was not ready to change their view on black people, but in their hearts, they knew the truth. 4. Gem wanted to protect his family and he was doing what Tactics would have done in the situation acting like Bobs comment had never been made in the first place. I think this was a very wise thing to do because Tactics really didnt need to know Bob Elses comment (he was trying to provoke them). Chapter 26 1 .When Miss render says American people dont believe in persecuting anyone, it seems off because it is not true. People are persecuted in America based on preju dice verdicts in this book as well as persecuted in general in the States. This statement is off because she is lying by saying that there is no persecution. 2. Scout is puzzled by Miss Gates disapproval of Hitler because she doesnt understand why Miss Gates hates him and why she is talking about all these awful things he did. She is also confused because she doesnt know why everyone seems to hate Hitler and she is upset that Miss Gates is talking badly about him and his past doings.Tactics taught them that it is not right to hate anybody. 3. Scouts indecision How can you hate Hitler an then turn around and be ugly to folks right at home? upsets Gem because when she asks him this, it may have reminded him of how Tom Robinson was treated due to his race. People did not believe his story and therefore he was found guilty in court, persecuting him because of his race. There isnt really an answer to this question because it is all based on the type of person you are as well as your be liefs. Chapter 27 1 .Aunt Alexandra is alarmed by Bobs behavior after the trial. Firstly, he threatened Helen Robinson (Toms wife) by following her, throwing things at her and calling her names. He also tried to break into Judge Tailors house and lastly, he threatened Tactics that he would get even with him. 2. Tactics thinks Bob is holding a scotch against people who were involved in the trial and sees them as his enemies. This is because Bob felt as if though these people ruined his reputation and made him look ad in front of most of Macomb. . The Halloween pageant took place in an attempt to keep the children off the street on Halloween night. Chapter 28 1. This chapter reminds me of before events in the novel like when Bob Lowell threatened Tactics after the trial. We know Bob isnt a good man because of what his daughter reveals during the trial (a drunk, abusive, etc. ). This chapter begins with descriptions of the Raddled house, which reminds us of the Boo Raddled game and the events involving Boo, to bring back our feelings about him before other events occur.
